Over the years, GMC has produced many trucks, from the popular Sierra 1500 to the powerhouse that is the Sierra 3500. With new models coming out each year, one question Dunmore and Carbondale residents constantly ask is what’s the towing capacity for this year’s model. This all depends on certain body styles, trim levels, and powertrain combinations, so let’s take a closer look at these updated figures.
GMC Sierra Towing Capacity
Since the amount of towing strength depends on several factors, we’re only going to be looking at each engine option using a ball hitch.
Sierra 1500
Turbocharged 2.7-liter: Max tow strength is 9,500 when equipped with a regular cab and a long bed.
5.3-liter V8: When equipped with a double cab and standard bed, this engine can tow 11,200 pounds.
6.2-liter V8: This engine can tow 13,000 as when using a crew cab with either a short or standard bed.
Turbodiesel 3.0-liter: This model can tow 13,200 pounds when equipped with a double cab and standard bed.
GMC Sierra 2500
6.6-liter V8: When equipped with any bed or cab, the Sierra 2500 can tow 14,500 pounds.
Turbodiesel 6.6-liter: When using a crew cab with a long or standard bed, the Sierra 2500 can tow upwards of 18,500 pounds.
GMC Sierra 3500
6.6-liter V8: To get the most towing power out of this engine, Archbald and Scranton drivers will need to buy a regular cab with a long bed. This way, the Sierra 3500 can tow 16,800 pounds.
Turbodiesel 6.6-liter: Most long bed and standard bed models share the same tow strength of 20,000 pounds.
