See how the GMC Terrain stacks up against the new SUV competition. A small SUV can cater to your daily drives between Carbondale, PA, Dunmore, and Scranton. The new GMC Terrain is at the top of the compact SUV class, but how does this crossover from Enyon GMC compare to rivals like the Mazda CX-50, Subaru Forester, and Volkswagen Taos? Our GMC dealership in Enyon is here to provide a deep dive on this quartet of SUVs.

GMC Terrain vs. the Competition — Interior Space

When you travel from Dunmore to Scranton in a new GMC Terrain, you get more legroom than other SUVs. The GMC Terrain has 40 inches of second-row legroom, topping the Mazda CX-50 and Subaru Forester at 39 inches, along with the Volkswagen Taos at 38 inches.

The front row of the GMC Terrain provides 41 inches of legroom, matching the Mazda CX-50 and topping the VW Taos by an inch. The Mazda CX-50 and VW Taos only offer 100 cubic feet of passenger volume, compared to 103 cubic feet in the GMC Terrain, which has a 30 cubic-foot storage hold.

That figure tops the Subaru Forester and VW Taos at 27 and 28 cubic feet, respectively. A new GMC Terrain gives you more room for running errands around Scranton! The Mazda CX-50 has 31 cubic feet of storage but maxes out at 56 cubic feet. The VW Taos tops out at 60 cubic feet. As you depart Dunmore on a weekend trip, the new GMC Terrain gives you access to 63 cubic feet of cargo space by folding the seats. All four SUVs seat five passengers.

GMC Terrain vs. the Competition — Performance

The new GMC Terrain delivers top torque values among these SUVs. The 203 pound-feet of torque from the GMC Terrain tops the Mazda CX-50 (186 pound-feet), the VW Taos (184 pound-feet), and the Subaru Forester (176 pound-feet). The GMC Terrain's turbocharged 4-cylinder engine produces 175 horsepower, which tops the Volkswagen Taos at 158 horsepower.

While the VW Taos does offer 4MOTION® all-wheel drive, there is no designated off-road model like the GMC Terrain AT4, which gives Enyon explorers access to all-wheel drive and Off-Road Mode through the Traction Select System. This rivals the Forester's Wilderness model and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, along with the CX-50's Intelligent Drive Select and i-Activ AWD® setup.

GMC Terrain vs. the Competition — Technology

Both the Volkswagen Taos and Subaru Forester have small touchscreens measuring 6.5 inches. Their biggest displays are eight inches. The new GMC Terrain gives Archbald drivers access to a standard 8-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay®/Android Auto™ integration. The VW Taos and Mazda CX-50 can match this, but the Subaru Forester's smartphone setup isn't wireless. The CX-50's Mazda Connect™ screen spans 10.25 inches.

A head-up display is missing for the VW Taos and Subaru Forester. When you choose the Denali trim for the GMC Terrain at our GMC dealership near Scranton, you get access to a head-up display. This counters the Mazda CX-50's Active Driving Display. Both the GMC Terrain and Mazda CX-50 offer Bose® sound systems, compared to BeatsAudio® for the VW Taos and Harman Kardon® for the Subaru Forester. Each new SUV transforms your listening experience on trips between Archbald and Scranton.

GMC Terrain vs. the Competition — Safety

You'll have confidence driving around Carbondale, PA in a new GMC Terrain, thanks to the SUV's standard GMC Pro Safety features. These include Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, IntelliBeam®, Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Following Distance Indicator, and Forward Collision Alert. When you upgrade to a GMC Terrain with GMC Pro Safety Plus, you can take the stress out of Scranton traffic by utilizing Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology in the Forester packages fewer features, and Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert isn't added until the Limited, which costs extra. The VW Taos provides Adaptive Cruise Control and other safety features through IQ.DRIVE®, while the Mazda CX-50 offers i-Activsense® safety features, but these are available and not standard like the Terrain's suite.
